Jacob's Custom 5-string Essence
« on: July 02, 2015, 07:10:27 PM »
So, Jacob's bass has been quietly making progress through the shop. It's high time I get all the images we've taken collected together. There's lots of interesting stuff happening here.

Glue-up for the neck. Striking combination of Ebony primary neck wood with Purpleheart.

 Neck after some processing.

Getting ready to glue the peghead scarf joint.

Continuous wood "all the things" as Bradley recently coined. This one has an extra all the things, a ramp.

Tops for the continuous wood pickup boxes.

 Making the pickup boxes.

Making the bottom half of the pickup boxes.

One down, one to go. thinking about Chris Squire right about now

Pickup box out of glueup, ready to shape. Test cover behind it.

Hey look! The coil fits  I spy a ramp taking shape in the background.     Lining up.     Body taking form.     Neck to body in pipe clamps.     Kris' "string of pearls" indicates the right amount of glue and pressure. That's a lot of Ebony right there!     Full view of the neck to body glue up     Sealing the interior of the pickup boxes with industrial epoxy (this is NOT your 5-minute hardware store stuff). This seals up the pores so the polyurethane potting compound can't squish out. Sample box on right already passed the test.     Only 2 sealer coats on this bass. Holy moly!     Detail of the ramp area. Continuous wood truss rod cover not installed.   It's going to be a sort of long boring wait now while Bob does the finish work, but this heap of images should amuse until the bass is completed.   (Message edited by mica on July 02, 2015)

Great pictures Mica!  This is some amazing work.  And I love the figuring on the top and back.

Wow! Stunning is the only word that comes to mind.  The combination of the ebony/purpleheart neck and the buckeye burl is amazing.  Any idea what the weight will be?

I think it's amazing how you guys got the pickups and the ramp to blend in with the neck, pickup and  and body woods. All the other ramps I see on basses are just a slab of wood between the pickups with no aesthetic artistry. I know it probably costs more to do it the alembic way but that's part of the custom experience. Well done. :-)

Superb bass.

I'm in awe.
It's soooo nice to be able to see builds like this.
I'm really glad Jacob opted for an FTC thread.
Your right Jazzy, the continuity really works with this  recipe.

This is a gorgeous combination of materials on this bass with corresponding exquisite craftsmanship. Thanks so much for the detailed pictures of the creation of the pickup boxes and ramp. It really makes a special FTC thread for a special bass!

Maybe for special basses like this, you could record and store sample sound clips.  I'd love to hear what this neck sounds like.

Beautiful on every count.
Are you thinking about burl knobs and black nickel plating for
the brass works?
Whatever it will be, no doubt will be fantastic.
Best neck recipe ever.
How much does it weigh?

I've often thought that if I get the chance to have a custom bass made I would like to be able to choose ebony as the major neck wood but not sure what the stringers should be. Purple heart is a good choice as I expect maple would be. I hope there will be some sound samples of this bass once it's in your hands Jacob.
